This sunset maternity photo shoot at Craggy Gardens near Asheville, NC was one I will not soon forget! From rolling clouds and fog, to lush green trees and a colorful sky, it was absolutely beautiful!

We had a foggy night at Craggy Gardens for Megan + Max’s maternity photos, and even though fog typically concerns a lot of photographers and clients, it’s a beautiful way to capture some of what Mother Nature shares with us! Sure, objects in the distance aren’t as clear, but when this happens there is this amazing calmness and glow about people and things. It’s unique and beautiful!

As I was driving up in elevation to Craggy Gardens to meet Megan and Max, the sky was getting darker. Of course I did not want a storm to roll in and cancel our session, so as I approached Craggy Gardens I was happy to see that the darkness was all coming from low lying clouds, or fog. Though this is not ideal for photos with long range mountain views, I knew it was still going to be a very beautiful setting!

When Megan and Max arrived, the clouds and fog were rolling through quite quickly, which meant we were likely to still get some mountain views once we reached Craggy Flatts. Armed with this idea, we started hiking. Though I typically stop along the trail to capture photos on our way up to Craggy Flatts, this time I took Megan and Max straight to the top. With the views being hit or miss, I wanted to be sure I had at least a few minutes of mountain views during this maternity session. Goodness, I am glad we did it this way! When we arrived at the top of Craggy Flatts there was a bit of a clearing that showed colorful and muted mountain views. We took full advantage of it right away. The sky was filled with pinks, oranges, and grays, and the entire area looked like it was glowing! It was gorgeous! I placed Megan and Max in the tall grass to start, and it was magic, right from the first shot!

As we worked our way through the photo session, we captured photos of Megan alone, more of Megan and Max together, and some very special shots of Megan and Max with a stuffed animal that holds a special place in their hearts.

We wrapped up our session with some photos under the old Civilian Conservation Corps shelter. It is beautiful with its weathered posts and beams, and dark shadows!

These two cuties were a perfect pair in front of my camera, and I am so very excited for them to meet their new babe soon!
