Asheville Photographer | 3 Things In My Camera Bag That You’d Be Surprised To Find

I recently had another Asheville, NC photographer ask me, “What are three things in your camera bag that most people wouldn't think are in there, but that you use regularly?” What a great question! This really got me thinking, because to me, all of the items in my camera bag are typical for my profession, and of course have a use. It also made me remember that the average client doesn’t know about my tools and tricks that I use to make my job easier and better.

So, let’s dive in to the three things that I carry in my camera backpack that you’d likely be surprised to find!

1. Googly Eye Finger Puppet

This item has an obvious use, since it’s a children’s toy. Though some people think I bring it to family photography sessions for kids to play with, I actually bring it to hold onto myself, and to get my younger clients’ attention. It fits perfectly on my shutter finger so that a child’s attention is directly at the camera.

2. Scissors

You truly never know when someone needs a pair of scissors. Often they get used to clip clothing strings, to take tags off of new clothes when a client forgets to do that, and to clip little flowers in a field. But, they can also be used for more rare instances, like when a child gets candy or gum in their hair.

3. Pressure Spring Clamp

Straight from the local hardware store! This tool is typically used for construction projects, in home garages, and when working on small projects. I use it all the time for wedding photography though. Can you guess when and why? …I use it to clamp the back of a wedding dress when photographing it. It helps pull in the waist of the dress so that it holds the shape of the person wearing it, and doesn’t fall flat. It is also rubber coated so that it never hurts the dress!

We all have unique tools that we use for our profession, and tricks that help us remain efficient and good at what we do. For me, they’re light and compact, which are perfect to stash in my gear bag!
